Week 13 or My sex education

A calming, rose-scented bath. A sleep, for once not interrupted by an alarm depriving you of dream and tranquility. A day to spend comfortably with all those amazing people, you otherwise  only meet in connection with twohundred assignments focused by, and dark shades under your eyes.

A practical matter As part of the second academic paper to write, all Arts and Culture freshman were asked to gather at the FHML (Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life sciences) , for a day enquiring into the work of psychologist Dilana Schaafsma. As a PhD-candidate, Schaafsma is recently conducting her research on the issue of sex education programmes for mentally disabled. Evaluating the progress of five existing projects over a long-term basis, she critically analyses wether patients in psychiatric wards finally do enjoy an improvement of their sexual health by means of the programmes or not.

Long way to go gone My task, then, was to elaborate on the work Schaafsma’s. Not only one ought to focus on her approach of conducting interviews with the programme developers; as for me, it was particularly thrilling to unveil her objections against the weak points of the programmes. Beforehand, not one single sex education programme adressed the disabled themselves before actually implemeting the material on them .Instead, conversations with care staff members uneffectively presented the touchstone for most of the developers projects.  Finally, one question necessarily had to be adressed : How do I, after having witnessed the psychologist´s approach, judge the credibility of her findings? Do I consider the knowledge presented trustworthy, waterproof ?

Again, Block 2 of the Arts and Culture curriculum particularly issues the development of knowledge in western culture- arriving at present day methods used by scientists in several fields, therefore, appears to be a coherent topic presented. Remember us starting out with Socrates in Week 1 ?

Finally it was about time for the second Open Mic Night- the Winter edition. I  genuinely admit that I LOVE this event and enjoyed already two of the greatest nights during my time in Maastricht sitting on the floor, listening to amazingly talented students. Presented by Weike, student of UCM and member of the Arts and Photography commitee, a great number of performers guided through the night.

Have a look- and join – maybe even participate! – in January. A special thanks goes to Ingmar Sturm who provided the pictorial material.
